It’s been six years since Daniel Day-Lewis announced his second retirement from acting. Some were skeptical that he would actually stop acting, but so far, he’s stayed true to his word.
A rare sighting of Day-Lewis occured last night on the red carpet premiere of wife Rebecca Miller’s “She Came to Me.” The three-time Oscar winner, one of the greatest actors, captivated attention, as he’s barely been seen or heard from.
While the spotlight was primarily on the film, Day-Lewis’ presence on the red carpet was undeniably significant. It‘s been four years since the celebrated actor was last publicly photographed. He’s always valued privacy and hated the spotlight.
Last year, appearing on the Happy. Sad. Confused. podcast, Adam Sandler admitted that Day-Lewis loved “Uncut Gems” so much that he now regularly texts and hangs out with him.
He’s the best, he texted me some funny shit today. He really is hysterical. It’s exciting, every time I talk to him, I love him so much, and I’ve hung out with him, and even when I eat with him, just eating he makes food feel succulent, he chews cool.
In 2017, Day-Lewis announced his retirement from acting after the release of “Phantom Thread”. Reflecting on his decision, he had told W magazine: "All my life, I’ve mouthed off about how I should stop acting... it was something I had to do."
Skepticism arose because this wasn’t the first time the 66-year-old actor decided to step away from acting. Following 1996's "The Boxer," Day-Lewis left acting and went into woodworking, becoming a cobbler.
It was one of the weirder stories to emerge. This newfound passion in shoemaking resulted in him moving to Italy where he embarked on an apprenticeship with shoemaker extraordinaire Stefano Bemer.
If he has indeed retired, Day-Lewis will be remembered for a handful of landmark performances in such films as “There Will Be Blood,” “Gangs of New York,” “My Left Foot,” “Lincoln,” “In the Name of the Father” and “The Crucible.”
