Filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie has been following Tom Cruise around for the last, oh, 15 years?
It all started when McQuarrie penned the screenplay for Cruise’s 2008 WWII flick “Valkyrie,” and then they kept working together on such films as “Jack Reacher,” “Jack Reacher: Never Back Down,” “Edge of Tomorrow,” “The Mummy,” “Top Gun: Maverick” and three ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies.
As he awaits for the next ‘Mission: Impossible’ to resume production in Australia, news is coming that McQuarrie is now attached, in some capacity, with “Sicario 3.” (via Collider) We’re not entirely sure what his role with be in the franchise, but Taylor Sheridan is supposed to be penning the screenplay — there is still no director attached.
On Saturday, we had reported that the original cast — Benicio del Toro, Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin — all want to come back for the third film. This would be an upgrade when compared to the underwhelming “Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado” — for which Blunt wasn’t a part of.
I’m guessing ‘Soldado’ director Stefano Sollima will not be back as he wasn’t mentioned by producers Molly Smith and Trent Luckinbill. I also doubt original filmmaker Denis Villeneuve would want to dive back into this franchise — he already has a plate full of passion projects that he wants to direct …
So, maybe McQuarrie could very well be directing the next ‘Sicario.’ It’s definitely something we’ll be keeping an eye on in the coming months.
The 54-year-old McQuarrie hit it big in the mid-90s as the whiz-kid screenwriter of “The Usual Suspects.” He then directed 2000’s underrated pulp noir “The Way of the Gun” before teaming up with Cruise for the rest of his career.
