As you can tell by the above aggregate, critics HATED “Friday Night at Freddy’s,” but audiences seems to be much more appreciative of the PG-13 horror flick. Who saw it this weekend?
‘Freddy’s’ has also exceeded early projections and is now estimated to earn $78M+ in its domestic opening weekend, making it one of the biggest horror openings ever.
The feature, directed by Emma Tammi, is based on a popular horror videogame, and these impressive numbers seem to be fueled by a very passionate under 25 demo.
“The film stars Josh Hutcherson as a troubled security guard who accepts a night-time job at an abandoned family entertainment center, where he discovers its four animatronic mascots are alive and kill anyone that is still there after midnight.”
Universal and Blumhouse must be laughing all the way to the bank. What a huge success this has been for them. I doubt they expected these kinds numbers. This only further proves that horror sells, video game adaptations sell and if you combine the two then it’s a box-office bonanza.
Here’s the most impressive part: “Five Nights at Freddy’s” was also available to stream on Peacock and has leaked on all of the illegal download sites. That doesn’t seem to matter much to most people, who clearly wanted to experience this movie in a theater, with a packed house, on opening weekend.
Moviegoing is a communal experience and this is further proof of that.
