More emails being answered. Here’s one: When is Steven Spielberg supposed to shoot his “Bullitt” reboot starring Bradley Cooper?
The last time I heard anything about this project, which was announced in late 2022, was earlier this year, in May — someone had mentioned to me that Spielberg would shoot it in 2024. He seems to have zeroed in on this being his next film.
I’m also calling this ‘Bullitt’ movie a reboot because it is not at all a remake of the 1968 classic. Yes, Spielberg’s film will center on the classic character, famously played by Steven McQueen, but the story is said to be completely different.
This would be Spielberg’s return to action set-pieces, which he is an absolute master of. After “West Side Story” and “The Fabelmans,” how can you not get excited for a grittier Spielberg film?
Set up at Warner Bros. the as-of-yet untitled film will not be penned by Spielberg’s regular writing partner Tony Kushner, but, rather, Josh Singer (“Spotlight,” “The Post”).
Directed by Peter Yates, the original “Bullitt” had to do with intense San Francisco cop Lt. Frank Bullitt, but the film is especially known for its incredibly visceral car chase scenes.
Spielberg is currently editing a documentary centered around his longtime composer, John Williams. That’s been taking up most of his time. It’s not like he could have shot a film during the strike. Hopefully, he’ll be able to shoot this next one in 2024.
Spielberg is turning 77. Time is ticking for many of these great old-school auteurs. It’s downright depressing just to think about it. Scorsese, Lynch, Coppola, De Palma, Scott, Eastwood, Polanski, Herzog, Allen, Carpenter, Haneke, Miyazaki.
