UPDATE: A24 is telling me that yesterday’s Geeks Vibes Nation “scoop”, that Jeremy Allen White and Jodie Comer will star Celine Song’s “Materialists,” was fake news. It was taken from some old pre-covid cast sheet.
EARLIER: A24 has hopped on-board “Past Lives” filmmaker Celine Song’s next film. I had originally reported that her sophomore effort would be titled “Materialists”. She’s already written the script and A24, who produced the acclaimed “Past Lives”, is backing it.
So, what’s the story about? It turns out that “Materialists” is a romcom inspired by James L. Brooks’s whip-smart films (“Broadcast News,” “Terms of Endearment”). Here’s the synopsis:
Set against the vibrant backdrop of New York City, a city that never sleeps and is known for its diverse and dynamic relationships, “Materialists” provides a unique glimpse into the lives of the city’s elite. Lucy’s expertise in matchmaking is highly sought after by those willing to pay a premium for her services. However, the film hints at complications that arise, leading to a toxic love triangle that threatens to unravel the lives of all involved.
Song’s “Past Lives,” which was released this past May, has been getting raves all across the board. It’s a cinch to show up on hundreds of critics top ten lists by years end. “Materialists” is obviously going to be a highly anticipated film.
