Alexander Payne told an audience at the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon that his next film might take him to unknown territory.
Payne confirmed that he is currently working with co-writer David Hemingson on his long-time dream to make a Western movie:
“I finally found a creative partner who shares the same zeal that I have for Westerns. [What matters is] a shared sensibility about what makes a good movie, then it’s just a matter of luck about finding the right person, as I have the luck in finding this guy,” he said, pointing to his co-writer among the audience.
In the meantime, Payne, the director of “Election,” “Sideways” and “Nebraska,” has “The Holdovers” being released in two weeks. The film, starring Paul Giamatti, is a return to form for Payne after directing 2017’s disappointing “Downsizing.”
