The few critics who did get a chance to watch and review “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” are raving about it. I’m not even kidding — 94 on Metacritic, 100% on Rotten Tomatoes (with a 9.3 average rating). I thought this was a movie just for Swifties.
Who actually believes these reviews? I get it if you’re already a mega fan of the musician that you’d completely and totally abide by this movie, but how about the rest of us?
The film was directed by this guy called Sam Wrench, whose sole credits are shot concert films for the likes of Lizzo, BTS and Billie Eilish. He’s probably going to have one hell of a career ahead of him after this one.
As I had mentioned yesterday, most critics were not invited to watch the Taylor Swift doc, only the trades got a sneak peek at it. However, plot twist, they all love it. Listen, this is great for movie theaters, who are very desperate right now, and that’s reason enough for this movie to exist. However, some are calling it a “masterpiece” and that’s where I draw the line, man.
The latest estimates have the Swift doc opening anywhere between $135-150 million, which is a ridiculous figure. Theaters are all sold out for it. Tickets are being resold online for an exorbitant amount of money. It’s a craze.
“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” is said to be a 2 hour 45 minute concert video of the singer’s recent ‘Eras’ tour. I’ll go watch it at an early matinee tomorrow, but, unless Swift has me in a spell, I don’t know if I will be able to withstand that runtime.
Critics are saying this one is going to be “saving” movie theaters. But haven’t they been saying this about a bunch of movies these last few years? ‘Barbenheimer,’ “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” ‘Avatar 2.’ It’s getting tiresome. What all of these movies have in common are that they are events, and that’s, sadly, where the future of the industry lies ahead.
