Writer-director Chinonye Chukwu, who is a very talented filmmaker, sounds like a sore loser in her social media attacks of the Academy.
The “Till” helmer called out the Oscars’ “unabashed misogyny towards Black women” after her film and its star, Danielle Deadwyler, were snubbed today in the Best Picture and Best Actress categories, respectively.
“We live in a world and work in industries that are so aggressively committed to upholding whiteness and perpetuating an unabashed misogyny towards Black women,” Chukwu wrote on Instagram Tuesday.
“I am forever in gratitude for the greatest lesson of my life – regardless of any challenges or obstacles, I will always have the power to cultivate my own joy, and it is this joy that will continue to be one of my greatest forms of resistance,” Chukwu wrote.
Good for you, Chinonye. I’m glad you’ve found a way to activate those dopamine and serotonin receptors inside your brain and found a way to “cultivate” joy despite the snubs.
Chukwu’s post was accompanied with a picture of the director with civil rights activist Myrlie Evers-Williams, because, of course, the lack of female nominees at this year’s Oscars is absolutely a civil rights issue.
