The above tweet is from a filmmaker whose 2022 film, “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair,” was a worthy addition to last year’s indie scene. It was a screwed-up Lynchian look at online anarchy.
The film in question Schoenbrun seems up in arms about is Betsy Brown’s “Actors” — it’s about a struggling young straight male actor, who can’t get cast in anything, that decides to pose as trans.
Schoenbrun’s claims that this film “reeks of violence” are laughable. If anything, “reeks of violence” is an automatic must-see for me. I guess a film like “Tootsie” wouldn’t have been able to screen either under Schoenbrun’s watch because it too “reeks of violence.”
The Music Box in Chicago pulled it’s screenings of “Actors” after Schoenbrun’s tweet. They gave in. Just like that. “Actors” doesn’t look like anything noteworthy but Music Box are massive cowards if they pulled it over a tweet. Although it’s good press for director Brown though.
