Academy president Janet Yang breached ethiquette last week by posting a lengthy endorsement of Michelle Yeoh and “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” just as Oscar voting was starting. She eventually deleted her tweets because someone must have told her that was a no-no.
If Cate Blanchett had given us her incredible all-timer performance in “TÁR” just 7-8 years ago then there wouldn’t be debate whether she’ll win the Oscar or not. It’d be a done deal. However, she’s now up against the full wrath of Yeoh’s steroid-injected awards campaign.
You see, if Yeoh were to win the Best Actress Oscar then she’d be the first Asian to ever win a lead acting Oscar. What a narrative for all the pundits and journalists out there. It’s too baity for them to ignore.
Blanchett not being the runaway frontrunner at the moment is akin to Daniel Day-Lewis’ performance in “There Will Be Blood” being outshone by a POC performance in 2007. Blanchett’s Lydia Tár is one for the cinematic time capsule, but there are people out there who couldn’t give a damn about that. It’s Michelle’s time. She has all the momentum at her disposal. That’s why I believe the EEAO actress might win the Oscar. I hope I’m wrong.
