The latest rumor has Catherine Breillat’s “Last Summer” premiering at the Berlin Film Festival. The film is said to be a remake of May el-Toukhy‘s 2019 film, “Queen of Hearts.”
If Breillat actually decides to premiere her first film in almost ten years at Berlin instead of Cannes, then all the power to her. I’m just saying, Cannes and Thierry Fremaux would have probably greeted her with open arms for this year’s edition.
The competition is set to be announced on Monday. This could actually be one of the starrier lineups the Berlinale has had in recent years. It does look as though the rumors that a 50/50 split between male and female directors in the competition lineup might come to fruition.

This past March’s lineup ended up producing only a handful of festival breakouts, such as “Alcarras” “Both Sides of the Blade,” “The Novelist’s Film,” and “Rimini.” It was a bit of an off year, but the same can be said about all the major festivals last year.
Steven Spielberg is set to receive the honorary Golden Bear at this year’s Berlin edition. Since “The Fabelmans” hasn’t yet been released in most of Europe, Spielberg’s autobiographical film has been chosen as the closing night film.
The 73rd Berlin International Film Festival will take place from February 16-26, 2023.
