The big surprises from this morning’s Screen Actors Guild nominations: Adam Sandler (“Hustle”) and Ana De Armas (“Blonde”) nominated in their respective lead categories.
The Sandler nomination is total atonement for the “Uncut Gems” snub and, in a year of weak male acting contenders, he absolutely deserves to be recognized for his excellent work in Netflix’s “Hustle.”
Meanwhile, the fervent “Blonde” fans of this site must be over the moon about De Armas getting recognized for her incredible work in Andrew Dominik’s unfairly maligned Marilyn Monroe biopic.
The biggest snub was clearly Michelle Williams in “The Fabelmans.” She might still get an Oscar nomination, but this is a momentum killer for her. Was it because her work was a supporting performance or were voters just not that impressed by her work in Steven Spielberg’s film?
Yes, “Women Talking” got that ever-elusive Ensemble nod, but Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley and Ben Whishaw were all three ignored for their respective performances. A Best Picture nomination for Sarah Polley’s film is not a total certainty.
Angela Bassett is inching closer to an Oscar nomination. She was recognized by the Guild this morning for her work in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
No Tom Cruise (Top Gun: Maverick) in Lead Actor. Dano nominated in Supporting. Judd Hirsch snubbed.
A big day for “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” they were nominated in every category they were supposed to be competitive in.
Also, despite no Pitt, Robbie or Calva recognition, SAG threw “Babylon” a lifeline with an Ensemble nod. It’s still alive and competitive in the Best Picture race, for now.
EARLIER: The SAG nominations will be more interesting than last night’s Golden Globes, that’s a given. As you know, there’s a ton of overlap between the SAG acting nominations and the Oscars. I’m not basing this off on-hand stats, but you’ll usually have 3-4 nominees in each acting category being recognized by the Oscars as well. The stat for Oscar/SAG winners is also at about a 75% match.
