Last week, Universal was contractually allowed (per its AMC agreement) to make Jordan Peele’s “Nope” available on VOD; Universal waited it out a bit longer than expected, but now they’re set to release it digitally on Friday.
“Nope” made around $2 million this past weekend. Contrast that with “Elvis,” which skyrocketed to #1 on VOD two Sundays ago, but still managed to make close to $3 million at the weekend box-office — it’s now grossed $145 million domestically.
As we speak, “Nope” has grossed $107 million domestically, it won’t reach the $175 million Peele’s first two films nabbed. Nope’s budget is said to be in and around $90 million — in comparison “Us” had a $20 million budget and “Get Out” a measly $4.5 million.
If I were Peele, I’d scale it back a bit with my next film. “Nope” was politely received by critics and audiences, but it wasn’t exceptional either. A studio will likely think twice now before giving Peele a huge budget like this last one.
