Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu produced, wrote, directed, edited and composed “Bardo.” Who are we kidding here? It’s his “Roma,” or at least that’s what he’s aiming for. Alfonso Cuaron also took on multiple creative duties for his own personal film set in Mexico.
However, although “Bardo” will tackle the immediate present, it is said to also span multiple time periods, including a historic 19th century battle sequence. Not to mention, Inarritu will be tackling the current migrant crisis between the American and Mexican border.
This nearly 3-hour movie has been a total enigma since being announced. Shot on 65mm, by Academy Award-nominee Darius Khondji, the film is said to be a semi-autobiographical account of the Mexican filmmaker’s roots in Mexico. We don’t know much else.
This is the Inarritu’s first film since 2015’s “The Revenant. The Mexican filmmaker has a lot of detractors, but he also has immense talent. His technical prowess is second-to-none and when he finds the right subject matter he can make worthy films. Let’s hope “Bardo” works out well for him.
