This past June, I wondered if Rodrigo Prieto was in fact the cinematographer for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.”
No need to wonder anymore, Prieto has confirmed his work in Gerwig’s film. In the interview, Prieto also mentions how audiences will be surprised by the film’s lack of superficiality and how it deals with contemporary themes.
Listen, the reason why we’re all so excited by this movie is not because we are Barbie fans, but because it’s directed by Greta Gerwig and co-written by Noah Baumbach. If these two artists were not part of the creative process, then this would not be one of the most anticipated movies of 2023. Add with Prieto, and now it’s very hard to not look forward to it.
Prieto finished 7th in my Best Cinematographerslist. He’s the master of the “bounce” — which brings up exposure levels, but without overtly jarring shadow. He’s the most sought-out DP in the game today, having worked with Scorsese, Iñárritu, and Almodovar.
