It doesn’t look as though Paul Schrader is a fan of Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog.”
You tell me. A recent cryptically-written Facebook post by Schrader has the writer-director basically insinuating that Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” is an Oscar contender because of its politics and money-driven campaigning rather than quality:
Schrader wrote:
“WAGGING THE POWER OF THE DOG: Entertainment liberals have always been eager to bemoan the power of money and spin to control political discourse but this years awards season makes clear this is business as usual in Hollywood as well. The only Oscar that matters goes to those who best game the award season. And this year’s $SPIN Award goes to: Netflix.”
Schrader is, of course, entitled to his opinion. I wholly disagree and believe that Campion’s film is great.
What matters is that “The Power of the Dog” is now the frontrunner to win Best Picture, and big shiny knives are all out for it. The Oscars will happen in just 12 days, and I have this feeling that we will continue to see people piling on their hate for Campion’s film.
Oh, and I still believe, when all is said and done, that “CODA” will win Best Picture.
