An IMDB Pro update is telling us that Francis Ford Coppola has started production on “Megalopolis” in Georgia. A November start date had already been penned months ago, but it’s good to see this one is going on as planned.
Coppola is funding the film with his own money, so he can basically do whatever the hell he wants. That means the main cast will be composed of Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Dustin Hoffman, Kathryn Hunter, Aubrey Plaza and James Remar.
Notice the underlined names. Coppola couldn’t care less what film twitter will think of this film. “Megalopolis” has been his passion project for close to four decades and he wants to make this sci-fi epic without any outside interference. Good for him.
The cost of the film is said to be around $120 million — Coppola had to sell off a massive share of his successful winery to make the damn thing. “Megalopolis” is said to be a Roman-style epic and the story of an architect who wants to rebuild a utopian New York City after a devastating disaster.
Production is set to run through March 2023. There is, obviously, no release date as of now. I would think ”Megalopolis” gets a 2024 slot given all the VFX and new technology that will be used on the film.
