The lineup for 73rd Berlin Film Festival is starting to take shape. Something tells me this upcoming Berlinale will have a more-than-decent lineup come early next year, with new films expected from prime auteurs. The actual lineup isn’t set to be announced until early January.
What we do know is that Steven Spielberg is set to receive the honorary Golden Bear.
Philippe Garrel’s “Le Grande Chariot,” formerly titled “La lune crevée,” now has a French release date set for March 8th, 2023. André Téchiné’s “Les Pieds Sur Terre” is also set for a post-Berlin release.
It was announced this summer that Christian Petzold’s “The Red Sky” will be coming in the “Spring of 2023.” That also means a presumed bow at Berlin. Also, what to make of Aki Kaurismaki’s “Dead Leaves,” his first film in over six years, will the Finnish filmmaker want to wait it out for Cannes? His last film, 2017’s “The Other Side of Hope,” opted for a Berlinale world premiere.
Then there’s Wes Anderson. In 2014, Anderson brought “The Grand Budapest Hotel” to Berlin, will he do the same with “Asteroid City”? He also has “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” in post-production — one of these will surely be kept for Cannes.
Maybe Pablo Larrain’s “El Conde”? It wrapped production in early fall and Larrain has been to Berlin.
I’ll continue updating the below list. So far, I have 16 potential titles next year’s Berlin Film Festival.
Christian Petzold’s “The Big Red Sky”
Francois Ozon’s “Madeleine”
Ira Sachs’ “Passengers”
Phillipe Garrel’s “Le Grand Chariot”
André Téchiné’s “Les Pieds Sur Terre”
Angela Schanelec’s “Music”
Cristi Puiu's “MMXX”
Aki Kaurismaki’s “Dead Leaves”
Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City”
William Oldroyd’s “Eileen”
Lone Scherfig’s “The Movie Teller”
Robert Schwentke’s “Seneca”
Frauke Finsterwalder’s “Sisi and I”
Margarethe von Trotta’s “Bachmann and Frisch”
Valerie Donzelli‘s “Love and Forests”
Patric Chiha's “The Beast in the Jungle”
This past March’s lineup ended up producing only a handful of festival breakouts, such as “Alcarras” “Both Sides of the Blade,” “The Novelist’s Film,” and “Rimini.” It was a bit of an off year, but the same can be said about all the major festivals this year.
The 73rd Berlin International Film Festival has confirmed its dates for next year, with the event set to run from February 16-26, 2023.
