A trailer for Marc Forster’s “A Man called Otto” was unveiled this morning. It looks very middle of the road, but could be a genuinely pleasing surprise this holiday season.
Set for a Christmas Day release, Forster’s remake has Hanks’ Otto forced to retire from his job of nearly 40 years after his wife dies. He decides to commit suicide. But his attempts are constantly interrupted by his annoying new neighbors.
Ever since his historic batch of Oscar nominated roles in the ‘90s, Hanks has struggled to garner the Academy’s attention over the last 25 years, but, in a year with a very weak field for male acting, he could have a shot.
Fact of the matter is that Hanks, the Jimmy Stewart of his generation, has still been delivering great performances despite the constant Oscar snubs. What else can you say about a 21st century filmography that includes “Cast Away,” “Road to Perdition,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Charlie Wilson’s War,” “Captain Phillips,” “Bridge of Spies,” “A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood,” and “Sully” ..
Hanks has been Oscar-nominated six times and won twice for “Philadelphia” and “Forrest Gump.”
