UPDATED: The numbers are in and the worst case scenario occurred. “Amsterdam” made just $6.5 million this weekend, it was shown in 3000+ screens.
EARLIER: “Amsterdam” just made $500,000 in previews on Thursday night. That’s just $50k more than what “Bros” grossed last week and that one ended up with a $4.8 million total during its three-day weekend.
You can forget the $11-12 million opening Gold Derby projected yesterday. This is turning disastrous for David O. Russell and 20th century. The reviews completely buried this film. Some are now predicting an opening anywhere between $6-8 million.
That $80 million budget sticks out like a sore thumb. A month ago it was aiming at a $21 million opening, last week it went down to $17 million, yesterday it was at $11-12 million tops and today it’s $6-8 million.
Meanwhile, The New Yorker’s Richard Brody, ever the contrarian, loved “Amsterdam”:
“Also, and I say this ahead of time, too briefly (for the moment), just so that no one will be deterred from seeing it: the critics are utterly wrong about Amsterdam, which is a very good movie.”
