Thierry Fremaux might have a dilemma next year due to Woody Allen, Roman Polanski and Johnny Depp potentially having new films ready for the Croisette.
Paris Match published an exclusive photo of Allen on the set of his latest Paris-based French-Language film. The ingredients are all there for a Cannes debut, but will Fremaux bite? The French outlet had this to say about the potential Cannes appearance:
Woody Allen and France seems to go hand in hand. The prolific and brilliant director has long been favored by Thierry Frémaux. But who knows if, in 2023, the Cannes Film Festival will dare to program what could be Woody Allen’s last film before retiring.
Fremaux has defended both Polanski and Allen in the past, but not without getting backlash for it. Polanski’s “The Palace” is currently in post-production, having moved its January release date in Italy to a TBD slot. Is it also eyeing Cannes?
Then you also have Maiwenn’s new film, “La Favorite,” which stars Johnny Depp. Could you just imagine the Cannes press conference for Maïwenn’s film? Despite not being a critical darling, Maïwenn has been a mainstay of the fest for quite a few years now, her last three films (DNA, Mon Roi and Polisse) have been screened at Cannes.
A lot to ponder for Cannes’ head chief in the months to come …
