After its production got delayed last year due to France locking down, it does look as though Julia Ducournau’s “Titane” will be part of this coming July’s Cannes Film Festival. At least, that’s according to French film rag “Les Inrockuptibles.” Ducournau’s festival breakout “Raw” turned many heads back in 2017 and sources says that buzz around “Titane” is so deafening that an official competition slot is very much on the table.
Meanwhile, Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” starring Frances McDormand and Denzel Washington, has been screened for Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux. Whether it actually makes it to Cannes is a whole other story since Apple TV, who recently bought the rights to the film, may want to wait it out for the fall festivals.
Ive updated our chart of the most likely films to make it to Cannes official competition this coming July. There have been a lot of pieces from the trades speculating inaccurately about some films. I’d rather be on the cautious side, but very well aware that last-minute changes can happen in the blink of an eye by Fremaux and his selection committee. However, as we speak, these are the titles with the best shot on 05.17.21:
