LeBron James is not a good actor. You can tell immediately after watching the trailer for “Space Jam: A New Legacy” (HBO Max, 04.16.21). His tone is off, his facial gestures stiff and he can’t even punctuate some of his dialogue correctly. Of course, Michael Jordan wasn’t a top-notch actor either, especially in the original 1996 film, but at least he had charisma — LeBron has none of that. There was also a sense of awe that surrounded MJ, a sort of untouchable finiteness which LeBron painstakingly lacks. The good news is that the CGI looks, amazing. The Looney Tunes are back. Yada, Yada, Yada. If the original “Space Jam” built its unearned reputation purely on nostalgia these last 25 years, then this sequel seems to, blindly, believe it can pretend the original never existed. Plus, no Bill Murray.
