I’m hit and miss when it comes to critically-acclaimed writer-director Taylor Sheridan. His movies all encompass the same narrative blueprint, they are etched in “screenwriting 101” tropes. “Sicario” was driven by Denis Villeneuve’s pulse-pounding direction, its sequel ‘Day of the Soldado’ was a total mess; “Wind River” was a wintry letdown. Sheridan’s more-than-decent directorial debut “Hell or High Water” was a solid neo-western, albeit, a tad overpraised. Suffice to say, you can rest assured, in all of these and future Sheridan endeavours, there will always be an unnecessarily elaborated coda tagged at the end. Sheridan’s latest effort stars, what appears to be, a miscast Angelina Jolie as a firefighter, it is titled “Those Who Wish Me Dead” (HBO Max, 05.09.21) and its synopsis sounds, well, very Sheridan-esque: “A teenage murder witness finds himself pursued by twin assassins in the Montana wilderness with a survival expert tasked with protecting him -- and a forest fire threatening to consume them all.”
