HBO is preparing to release Jordan Peele’s upcoming racially-minded series, “Lovecraft Country.”
As seen in the new trailer, the series is set in the Deep South ‘50s, as a Black man and woman attempt to fight off monsters whilst uncovering the truth behind the man’s family legacy. Since this takes place in Jim Crow-era America, our lovebirds also encounter rampant racism along the way.
If Peele’s own “Get Out” and “Us” prepared us for anything, it’ for a filmmaker loves to mix genre cinema with societal discourse. This latest excursion for Peele, who is listed as producer, looks promising enough, but there is a risk of laying it on a little too thick or, even, given that this is a blend of genres, tonal deficiencies occurring.
HBO is expected to premiere “Lovecraft Country” in August.
Here’s the synopsis:
Based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff of the same name, the series follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.
