According to Netflix, the Chris Hemsworth-starring “Extraction,” from director Sam Hargrave, and producers The Russo Brothers, is on pace to become the most-watched film in Netflix history, all this during just its first 4 weeks of streaming. [via Netflix’s Twitter]
“We are blown away by the response and the support,” Hemsworth said on Instagram. “On behalf of myself, the Russo Brothers, Netflix, our director Sam Hargrave, thank you so, so much. We love you guys.” He went on to add, “there’s been a lot of talk and questions about sequels and prequels and all sorts of things, and all I can say is, who knows? But with this amount of support, it’s something I will be pretty stoked to jump back into.”
In my mixed review of “Extraction,” I mentioned how it plays like a “no-plot-all-action manifesto … At times it works, but you can only avoid the cliches for so long before they become distractions in of themselves.” However, I was blown away by a particular action sequence, which will no doubt rank among the very best of the year:
“Extraction” survives solely by its action scenes, shot on location in India by DP Newton Thomas Sigel (Three Kings, Drive, Bohemian Rhapsody), this includes a breathlessly exciting 12-minute chase through the streets of Dhaka that’s meant to look like a single take. Filled with car chases, foot chases, gun battles, knife battles, hand-to-hand combat, and plenty of grenade explosions, it’s one of the very best action sequences you will see this year and the clear high-point of this otherwise dispensable movie. Credit must go to Hargrave, who was Captain America and Thor’s stunt-double during the last phase of the MCU — behind the scenes, he strapped himself to the front of a camera car to attain the jolting effect which seeps through the screen. The result is nothing short of eye-popping.”
