Contrary to what you may have read today, “Wonder Woman 1984” will not be skipping its theatrical release in favor of an exclusive VOD release. This was confirmed by IndieWire via a Warner Bros. rep. It was never going to happen, too much money is on the line for this movie — I honestly don’t know how this rumor could have even been started when you look at the stakes at hand and the movie’s noticeable monetary projections.
There was just no way that director Patty Jenkins’ DC tentpole would be skipping its theatrical release, given it’s a tentpole movie which was made very much with the intention of being seen in packed houses on the largest screen possible. However, the inevitability of other releases skipping theatrical and going straight to VOD is very much there. We already saw it with Universal recently pushing theatrical films such as “Emma,” “The Invisible Man,” and “The Hunt” straight to VOD platforms and even announcing a day-and-date release for “Trolls World Tour.”
There is currently no release date change for “Wonder Woman 1984,” slated to open on June 5th. Will it move? That would all depend if the Coronavirus pandemic inflicting the globe could be contained by then. Chances are it won’t, but in these days of morose anxiety and social distancing, a glimmer of hope is what we all need right now.
