The Golden Globes voting body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, has announced that, at least until April 30th, films can qualify for consideration by the HFPA even if they do not first screen in a theater. That means streaming content will be eligible.
This game-changing decision is, of course, due to the coronavirus pandemic that has put L.A.and it theaters in lockdown mode. The globe press release states that films "may instead be released first on a television format (e.g. subscription streaming service, subscription cable channel, broadcast television, etc.) and will still be eligible."
As for the Oscars and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, according to Scott Feinberg, they are currently deliberating about how to handle eligibility when it comes to next year’s 93rd Oscars they are expected to announce something on April 14th.
The date for the 78th Golden Globes has not yet been announced, but it is set to take place in early 2021.
