Adam Sandler has benefited tremendously from the streaming era. If his films were starting to underperform in the early 2010s at the box-office, his 2015 partnership with Netflix has expanded his global audience to new territories and consequentially made him the top streaming star in the world. To the point where today Netflix announced that its audience watched more than 2 billion hours worth of Adam Sandler movies since 2015. Wowza. This has led the streaming giant to having the actor sign a new four movie deal with them worth up to $275 million.
“Whether you know him as Sandman, the Water Boy, Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, Nick Spitz or simply Adam, one thing is clear: our members can’t get enough of him,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer. “They love his stories and his humor, as we saw with ‘Murder Mystery.’ So I could not be more excited to extend our partnership with Adam and the Happy Madison team and deliver more laughs around the world.”
Sarandos also announced that “Murder Mystery,” was easily the most popular film released by Netflix in 2019. Netflix claims that 83 million households watched “Murder Mystery” in its first four weeks of release. A Netflix spokesperson confirmed that the data tweeted out was accurate, and clarified that Netflix only counts views if members finished at least 70% of a film. In terms of box-office numbers, If it’s $8 a ticket then it’s $ 240 million box office worldwide (and we all know it’s hard to find an $8 movie ticket these days at multiplexes).
Later this year, the actor will star in “Hubie Halloween” with Kevin James, Julie Bowen and Maya Rudolph.
