Warner Brothers' R-rated “Joker” may very well end up nabbing blockbuster numbers at the Box-Office.
First reactions for the movie, which stars Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character, began surfacing at Venice and as buzz built on through the weekend so did its Box-Office prospects. This led Box Office Pro to update the opening weekend range they had for the film from $70 million to now $95m.
Only three R-rated movies have ever had 100+ million dollar opening weekends: “Deadpool,” “Deadpool 2” and “IT.” Of course, as mentioned, these projected numbers for “Joker” should not be surprising at all considering the movie's debut at the Venice Film Festival resulted in an eight-minute standing ovation and some very good reviews.
“Joker”is scheduled to screen again next week, but this time at the Toronto International Film Festival — tickets for the sold out TIFF premiere are now being resold at the asking price of $700 on StubHub.
