The Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness program will be announced tomorrow, but, for the time being, a lovely Platform lineup was announced today by TIFF, with new films from Alice Wincour, Julie Delpy and Sarah Gavron. No, this is not your run-of-the-mill Oscar contender-filled lineup, but it does satisfy the needs for cinephiles in search of counterpgramming, especially with Oscar-bait running rampant all over the festival for 10 days.
Pietro Marcello’s “Martin Eden” will be in competition at Venice and was also selected to be part of the New York Film Festival, so if there is any movie that could break out of this lineup this year it’s that one. Ditto Frederico Veiroj’s “The Moneychangers” which has come out of nowhere to now become an NYFF and TIFF selection.
