Over the last week, Universal’s film “The Hunt.” was thrust in a marketing controversy that led to media outrage, it didn’t help that its trailer happened the same week as two mass shootings occurring and Donald Trump denouncing the Jason Blum-produced movie. Production company Blumhouse and Universal eventually decided to shelve “The Hunt,” which told the story of liberal elites hunting “deplorable” Trump supporters.
I had been told by a close friend that Blum was receiving death threats over the whole ordeal. Speaking to Vulture, Blum admitted he had learned a lot from the controversy and that it, quite frankly, shook him:
“I learned a lot of lessons,” admitted Blum. “If I was offered the choice to make the movie again, I would say yes. We definitely made marketing mistakes, and we made plenty of mistakes along the way. So I’ve learned a lot. It might change how I would position movies and how I would consult on the marketing of the movies. But actually the making of the movies? No.”
Will there ever be a “right time” to release “The Hunt”? Blum seems to think so, hinting in the interview that it will eventually see the light of day in theaters. However, for now, the film has been shelved and is awaiting release, whenever that may be.
