“Little Women” is an important movie for director Greta Gerwig, the cast is major-league (Chalamet, Ronan, Streep, Watson, Dern, Pugh) and she’s coming off the triumphant success of her Oscar-nominated debut feature “Lady Bird,” by being tasked to take on this prestige-filled adaptation of a classic novel. The trailer hints at Gerwig embracing the period setting, but with character behaviors feeling modernized by present-day attitudes. It will be interesting to see if this one strikes a chord with audiences as these kind of big-studio period-films have gone extinct since their glory days of the ‘90s (“Howard’s End,” “Sense and Sensibility”). Regardless, Gerwig and Sony want to take their time before unveiling this movie, nothing wrong with that, which means “Little Women” is most likely skipping fall festivals in favor of a Holiday release (December 25th).
