Eddie Murphy hasn’t starred in a film since 2011’s misbegotten “Tower Heist.” He does have two notable projects being released in the coming months; A sequel to ”Coming to America” and, what we will be tackling today, the blaxploitation-based “Dolemite Is My Name”
Filmmaker Craig Brewer directs ‘Dolemite’ which is a biopic of real-life actor Rudy Ray Moore, a man who ended up creating the famous cinematic blaxploitation character Dolemite in the 1970s. Murphy seems to have loved his experience with Brewer so much that he probably pulled a few strings to have Brewer direct his upcoming "Coming to America" sequel as well.
As seen in the first trailer for “Dolemite Is My Name,” Murphy plays the struggling actor who created the martial artist pimp character Dolemite for the screen. And, judging by the small bit of footage, I haven't seen Murphy this excitingly vibrant on-screen since …”Dreamgirls”?
"My Name Is Dolemite" was penned by the excellent writing team of Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski. Murphy will play the blaxploitation star alongside a cast that includes Wesley Snipes, Keegan-Michael Key, Chris Rock, Craig Robinson and T.I. The film is set to have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this coming September.
