The first trailer for Universal Pictures’ Queen & Slim is here and it looks like a socio-political/African-American version of “Bonnie and Clyde” and “Thelma & Louise.” Universal’s press release describes the film as “a powerful, consciousness-raising love story that confronts the staggering human toll of racism and the life-shattering price of violence.” “Queen & Slim” is the feature directing debut for director Melina Matsoukas (HBO’s “Insecure”). It stars Daniel Kaluuya and rising star Jodie Turner-Smith as the titular characters. Talented writer Lena Waithe (“The Chi”) was given responsibility to adapt the bestselling novel by author James Frey (“A Million Little Pieces”).
If you remember, Jeff Sneider, a decent guy that’s also in-the-know when it comes to Oscar buzz, claimed [via tweet] just a few weeks ago, that two African-American-centered movies (Melina Matsoukas“Queen and Slim” and Deston Daniel Cretton’s “Just Mercy.”), which were on absolutely nobody’s radar, may be Oscar contenders. Sneider claimed that “after surveying the awards landscape, chatting with sources & listening to the infamous InSneider gut, [he was] prepared to go way out on a limb & tell [us] in July that one year after the Green Book win, the Oscar will go to one of these two movies. All due respect to AERONAUTS & CATS.”
This was, of course, before the “Cats” trailer was unleashed on the American people.
“Queen & Slim” will be released in theaters on November 27th
