I absolutely adore Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, which happens to be North America’s largest genre film festival. The fest’s lineup consists of over 130 titles from around the world. It’s a three-week shindig for movie nerds worldwide.
Celebrating its 23rd edition this year, the festival has been screening premieres such as Malik Bader‘s “Killerman,” “Matthew Pope’s “Blood on Her Name, Phillipines’ “Mystery of the Night,” David Marmor’s “1BR,” Abner Pastoll’s “A Good Woman is Hard to Find,” Shaun Piccinino’s “American Fighter.”and the first Critters movie since the ‘80s, titled “Critters Attack!”
Other titles which have already screened include Cannes midnight hit “The Gangster, The Cop and The Devil” (meh) and the Lupita Nyong’o Sundance zombie comedy “Little Monsters.” (double meh).
I will try to catch the world premiere of “Ready or Not,” the Emile Hirsch-starring “Freaks,” SXSW hits “Bliss,” “Daniel Isn’t Real,” “Extra Ordinary,” and Larry Fessenden’s much-anticipated “Depraved” — these will all be screened this week.
Last year I discovered Daniel Goldhaber’s “Cam” at the fest, which was consequentially bought by Netflix. Nothing close to that kind of surprise has arrived yet this year, but there are still 11 days left.
The Fantasia International Film Festival takes place in Montreal July 11 – August 1st 2019. For ticketing and further details head over to the official Fantasia site.
