Universal UK decided to release the full trailer for “Cats” this afternoon and, errr, it’s not pretty. I’m not sure what to make of the VFX-infused frames, but, lest we forget, there is a reason why it’s taken over 38 years to finally bring “Cats” to the big screen. It’s a musical that has, for the longest time, been deemed “unfilmable.”
Based on the hit musical, the longest-running one in Broadway history, “Cats” is the latest Oscar-bait vehicle for director Tom Hooper. Hooper, if you remember, gave us “Les Miserables,” “The Danish Girl” and “The King’s Speech.” Andrew Lloyd Webber reprises his own sweeping score. Also, the cast is A-list great: Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Rebel Wilson, Idris Elba, James Corden, Jason Derulo and … Taylor Swift.
Universal Pictures will release “Cats” on December 20th.
