Is Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” avoiding the fall film festival circuit altogether? That’s news to me. This latest rumour comes to us courtesy of all-around-wonderful-people Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson who spoke, at length, about the current state of cinema in their latest IndieWire podcast.
Gerwig’s film had been test-screened a few times the past couple of months. Reactions have been mostly positive. I’m not entirely sure why bypassing TIFF and Telluride would be a good thing for such an anticipated, supposedly, auteur-driven movie, but I’m not ready to theorize.
Kohn and Thompson also mention “The Farewell” and “Midsommar” as the arthouse breakouts of the season. Has it been that lame-duck a summer? Yes, “The Farewell” is great, but “Midsommar” is a total polarizer.
