Cannes 2019: Jarmusch, Malick and Almodovar Confirmed; Ari Aster's ‘Midsommar' not going.

April 2, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

Ari Aster’s “Midsommar” might not be going to Cannes after all. At least, that’s what rumors have been hinting at. The film is set to be released in August, does that mean a bow at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival could be an option?

Terrence Malick‘s “Radegund,” Jim Jarmusch‘s “The Dead Don’t Die” and Pedro Almodovar‘s “Pain and Glory” are all confirmed for Cannes ’19 competition. In addition, Hirokazu Kore-eda‘s “The Truth” (Juliette Binoche, Ethan Hawke) is being touted as a possible opening night movie. [via French magazine Satellifax]

In addition, the always-reliable Cédric Succivalli has confirmed the above:

Almodóvar, Jarmusch and Malick have secured a comp slot. This tea is accurate. Balagov, Dardenne(s), Diop, Loach, Porumboiu & Sciamma are reported to be near locks too. There are still 16 days to reshuffle the cards though and a LOT of contenders are still to be seen.#Cannes2019 https://t.co/zYX5wbTkrS

A few things have changed in my weekly Cannes predictions. The potential competition lineup is starting to shape — I currently have 24 films slated for Competition. Cannes tends to change anywhere from 19-22, so, give or take, a few of these could either go to a subsection of the fest (Un Certain Regard, Quinzaine, Critics Week) or just not be chosen at all. Of note, the lineup is set to be announced by Thierry Fremaux on April 19th.
