Earlier this year, “Ghostbusters” star Dan Aykroyd confirmed to The Greg Hill Show that Bill Murray would be returning as Dr. Venkman for the upcoming “Ghostbusters 2020.” Murray and Akroyd will be also be joined by Sigourney Weaver who will reprise her role as Dana Barrett.
Director Jason Reitman will direct and co-write “Ghostbusters: Afterlife’,” which is said to be set in the original universe. The production is targeted to start this year with a planned Summer 2020 release date. Reitman had previously told Entertainment Weekly that the new movie will ignore the 2016 reboot directed by Paul Feig, and will be a direct continuation of the 1984 original.
Reitman is the son of Ivan Reitman, who directed the original movies. Jason has had his own very successful career as a filmmaker ever since his 2005 debut "Thank You For Not Smoking,” following that one up with the Oscar-nominated "Up in the Air" and "Juno."
As mentioned, Reitman (“Juno,” “Up in the Air,” “Tully“) will co-write and direct. — his vision for the film seems to be both a mix of nostalgia and moving forward: “This is gonna be a love letter to ‘Ghostbusters,'” Reitman told Vanity Fair, earlier this year. “I want to make a movie for my fellow “Ghostbusters” fans.” It will be a separate entity from director Paul Feig‘s 2016’s “Ghostbusters” and instead be considered the third installment after the first two movies.
