Michael Mann has been missing in action this decade, a surprising disappearance act from the great director of such muscular achievements as “The Insider,” “Collateral,” and “Heat.” So, what happened? He’s released only one movie in the last ten years, 2015’s misbegotten “Blackhat.”
Judging by a Deadline report, Mann will be making his much-anticipated comeback with the upcoming HBO Max series “Tokyo Vice.” “Baby Driver” actor Ansel Elgort is set to star in Mann’s show. “Shang-Chi” filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton was originally supposed to direct the episodes, but something changed during pre-production and now Cretton is only being credited as a producer on the project.
“Tokyo Vice” was written by JT Rodgers and is based on the non-fiction book by Jake Adelstein, about his time serving as a beat reporter in Tokyo, following the local police.
The HBO Max streaming service is set to launch sometime in spring 2020.
