UPDATED: This weekend MGM had their first full-blown theatrical success since the legendary studio was bought by Amazon last year.
“Creed III” opened to a franchise record $58.6M — making around $20 million more than earlier projections had predicted. And this was despite terrible weather in a lot of places. That’s also the highest debut ever for a sports movie.
This was the first ‘Rocky’ franchise film without Sylvester Stallone. Now the “Creed” series will roll on without him. The success practically guarantees a few more ‘Creed’ movies being released this decade.
EARLIER: Looks like Michael B. Jordan’s “Creed III” will be a big box-office success. Its audience ratings have been superb so far.
It made $6M+ in Thursday previews and audience reception has been very good. I wouldn’t be surprised if it hits $50 million this weekend.
Although I found it commercially predictable, the reviews are good with a 73 on Metacritic and 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics are way too generous these days.
The “Creed” movies have basically become “Rocky” for the 21st Century, this means that we’ll probably be getting six or seven of these movies, maybe more, before an inevitable reboot happens, with probably another boxing character occurs — my bet is that Adonis’ daughter takes over in 2030.
