The 43rd annual London Critics’ Circle Film Awards knighted Todd Field’s “TÁR” as the Best Film of 2022. A justly merited honor. Ditto Todd Field winning Best Director. Cate Blanchett also won Best Actress. What a tour-de-force that movie was.
Many keep saying what a weak year at the movies it was, but at least we had “TÁR” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” which won Actor (Collin Farrell), Supporting Actress (Kerry Condon), Supporting Actor (Barry Keoghan), Screenwriter (Martin McDonagh) and British/Irish Film of the Year. London has good taste.
‘TÁR’ and ‘Banshees’ are two of the five big competitors for the Best Picture Oscar, the others being “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “The Fabelmans,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Maybe “All Quiet on the Western Front” also has a shot? At least one person believes that to be the case.
The past few Best Film winners included “The Power of the Dog,” “Nomadland,” “Parasite,” and “ROMA.” The LFCC is one of the most prestigious film organizations in the world.
