James Mangold and Disney debuted a new trailer for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” during the Super Bowl. You can check it out here.
You get to see a glimpse of a de-aged Harrison Ford. The stunts are wild, but in the back of my head I keep thinking “there’s no way 80-year-old Indy can do that.”
That’s the thing about this upcoming movie, rumored to have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, you’ll probably have to suspend disbelief if you want to fully enjoy Mangold’s film.
I’m fine with that. However, rumors that there were reshoots and different endings don’t help. Ditto the private screenings for Disney head honchos which had the big brass calling for the above mentioned reshoots.
Mangold is a talented “hired-hand” filmmaker with no real “auteur” stamp to his style. Don’t get me wrong, he’s highly talented behind the camera, but what exactly links “Ford v Ferrari,” “Logan” and “3:10 to Yuma”? The myth of the male hero?
As mentioned last week, ‘Dial of Destiny’ has a $300 million budget. I don’t sense any genuine excitement for this film, but people will show up this summer to see it (I think). The stench of ‘Crystal Skull’ is still felt by many fans, but given that this is Ford’s final hurrah with the fedora and whip maybe that’ll be enough to sway audiences to buy a ticket.
In turn, ‘Dial of Destiny’ ranks as the 7th most expensive movie ever made. Add in marketing costs and it’s probably going to have to gross about half a billion dollars to make any sort of decent profit.
This fifth instalment will be released on June 30th. Joining Ford in the cast will be John Rhys-Davies, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, and Antonio Banderas.
