The buzz on Luca Guadagnino's "Suspiria" is all over the place. I don't know what to think anymore. Word was Cannes didn't like it, others said it wasn't even submitted for the fest and now Tarantino says it made him cry. Could be a love it/hate it affair.
Oh, and I need to mention that its star, Dakota Johnson, stated earlier this week that the film itself was the "closest to Kubrick" she had ever seen in today's cinema. Whatever that means.
Here's an interview Guadagnino did with Italy's La Repubblica about screening the film for QT:
“We’ve been friends since our jury duty at the Venice Film Festival. I was nervous but eager to hear his advice. We saw it at his place and his reaction warmed me. He was enthusiastic about it, in the end he was crying and hugged me. Because it’s a horror movie but also a melodrama, my goal was to make you look at the horror without being able to take [your eyes off the screen] because you’re captivated by the characters. Amazon is very happy.”
My reaction to the trailer a month ago:
"Do I want to see this? Of course, it's Guadagnino tackling a bonkers horror Giallo. However, my real concern? Where's the auteur voice that was honed and perfected in "Call Me By Your Name," and, to a certain extent, in "A Bigger Splash" and "I Am Love"? You wouldn't know this was directed by Guadagnino if his name wasn't stamped on this trailer."
