After his stunning debut, except for the idiotic last 10 or so minutes, "District 9" director Neil Blomkamp was seen as the second-coming for sci-fi, a visionary that could change the game for the genre. Of course, that didn't happen. His follow-up "Elysium," which I like by the way, was met with a major shrug and then, even worse, his third film "Chappie" was a total unmitigated disaster, a Hugh Jackman robot movie that was mocked to no ends. Nevertheless, MGM has decided to hire Blomkamp to "What I connected to as a kid has evolved over time," Blomkamp told Deadline. "
MGM wants to revive the franchise with the titled "RoboCop Returns," which will apparently directly follow the 1987 original film. MGM is basically saying, "hey, let's totally ignore the 2014 reboot." I'm ok with that.
