I have been critical of Antoine Fuqua's directing style, but he did direct “Training Day,” which earned Denzel Washington an Oscar for his performance. Ever since then the duo has collaborated on two ‘Equalizer’ films, and the misbegotten remake of “The Magnificent Seven.” They have a very good working relationship, but Fuqua told THR that they are not done. In fact, he wants Denzel to play Tony Montana in his remake of "Scarface."
“I would love for it to take place internationally, I think Denzel would be a great James Bond-type character. [Denzel and I] talk about a lot of different things. I’ve got some things I’m developing and roles I’d like him to play. Normally, that’s how it works with him. I’m dreaming him up as a cowboy or something, and then I’ve got to go pitch it,” explains the director.
“My dream is for him to be Scarface. He laughs sometimes and he kind of goes, ‘[Al] Pacino did a great job! I don’t want to do that.’ I’m nudging him. I’m trying to nudge him into doing it,” said Fuqua.
It sounds like Fuqua keeps bugging Denzel about it but the actor refuses to do it. The director has been in development on “Scarface” for years, with no actors really named to star in the film. Now that Fuqua has revealed Denzel we can't help but think no other actor should be cast.
