In an exclusive bit of news, Collider is reporting that Sony execs are planning on stamping an R rating on the upcoming "Venom" movie. That's great news as I have made it abundantly clear that there is no way you can pull off a movie about "Venom" without the horrific carnage that comes with this symbiotic character.
They are also planning on having the film launch their own Marvel Cinematic Universe, which coincides with their upcoming "Spider-Man: Homecoming." It is no secret that Sony has been a struggling movie studio for quite some time now, a series of box-office bombs (Ghostbusters, The Brothers Grimsby, Inferno, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, Pride Prejudice and Zombies) have set the company up for financial ruins and an estimated loss of close to half a billion dollars. Having them try the MCU isn't any big surprise, but it stinks of desperation and feels like a stretch given that they only own the rights to Spider-Man characters. They are striking a deal with Marvel to include Spidey in their films, but how that could help them financially is still up in the air given that Marvel studios still own the rights to everything else.
Sony's own Marvel Cinematic Universe will not be connected to the other MCU in any way, the upcoming "Venom," "Black Cat" and "Silver Sable" are a stretch in trying to create something akin to what Marvel studios has done with their juggernaut, but Sony execs seem to be quite adamant in their idea to have their own MCU.
