Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Mickey 7’ Set to Start Shooting in August

May 13, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

We had reported on 12.20.21 that Bong Joon-ho was setting his sights on his next film and that Tilda Swinton was going to be part of it. The following month, Variety officially confirmed Bong’s next film, which the trade said would also star Robert Pattinson and be an adaptation of Edward Ashton’s upcoming novel, “Mickey 7.”

Now we’re hearing that production on “Mickey 7” is set to commence in the UK, with the months of August to December booked for shooting. That’s five months for Bong to get his movie ready for Cannes ‘23.

The novel’s official synopsis:

“The story follows Mickey7, an Expendable, a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.”

After his Cannes and Oscar-winning “Parasite,” Bong’s is going back to the English-language feature for the first time since his 2017 film, “Okja.” This would be Bong and Swinton’s third collaboration together after “Snowpiercer” and “Okja.”

Meanwhile, Pattinson continues to amass the A-list auteur directors in his filmography having already worked with Cronenberg, Herzog, Gray, Safdie Brothers, Denis, Eggers, and Nolan.
