There was a screening of 1984’s “The Cotton Club” last night at Atlanta’s Plaza Theater with Francis Ford Coppola in attendance. A few of our readers were in attendance last night.
The event was also a birthday celebration of sorts for the filmmaker, who turned 85 on Sunday. He stayed for a Q&A, which lasted until 1:30am, and the audience even popped some champagne from Coppola’s winery company.
Coppola answered many questions, including that he’s been on the phone with Venice and Cannes who both are trying desperately to get “Megalopolis.” That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
However, near the end, he more or less confirmed a Cannes premiere, adding “that’ll be in Cannes in 3 days” — supposedly, referencing the lineup announcement on April 11. I gather he wasn’t supposed to say that, and probably only, if anything, realized his hiccup much later on.
Coppola also spoke about his next film which will be an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s “The Glimpses of the Moon” and “inspired” by Leo McCarey’s “The Awful Truth.” Both deal with married couples amicably splitting up only to find it harder to let go of each other than they initially thought.
Just a week ago, Coppola had confirmed that he was already working on a new film, but didn’t give any details about it.
“One way I knew “Megalopolis” was finished is that I’ve begun work on a new film,” he tells Deadline. “It won’t be cheap by any means, but I don’t know if it can be called ‘an epic film.'”
